Episode 19 Pipeliner Post and The Swallowtail Shawl

Download here or listen from Flash Player in sidebar.

You are invited!
My annual Longaberger Holiday Open House.
November 21st 11 AM to 3 PM at my home.  Brunch will be served.  contact me for details.

I visited with knitters from the guild in Springfield IL when they held their retreat at the Cornerstone Inn on The Square last weekend.  Great group of ladies!
Then I spent the afternoon piping at Reformation Days for Providence Church

With several of the lovely ladies from Reformation Faire Days.  I wore one of my old shawls, a woolen triangular shawl designed by Linda Carlson.  It is about 30 years old now.  It is total coincidence that it looks good with the band tartan.

My Swallowtail Shawl is finished! My project notes are here. Materials are Pearl in Chimney Sweep from The Woolen Rabbit. (merino and bamboo blend).  The Swallowtail Shawl is a pattern by Evelyn A Clark.

Episode 18 A Long Letter from Elizabeth Zimmermann

Another Elizabeth Zimmermann treasure!  The letter is dated December 1, 1979.  It is written in green ink on hotel stationary from Elizabeth and Arnold's 4 week trip to Iceland, France, and Germany.

The dried spaghetti complete with a little sauce.

Visit School House Press, the business started by Elizabeth and now run by Meg Swansen and her family.

Topics relating to Elizabeth Zimmermann and discussed in the show:
  • The advantages of knowing how to knit both Continental and English/American styles.
  • How to learn "the other method".
  • Does knowing Elizabeth Zimmermann's EPS and reading her books "spoil" knitting more conventional designs?

My friend, Eleanor Webster.  Knitter and extraordinary person!  We were attending our P.E.O. Convention, wearing hats for some kind of identification.

The musical selection if from The Airs of Wales by Cheryl Ann Fulton.  Tune:  The Ash Grove.  Available from Magnatune.  You can play this album from the button in the sidebar at right.

The show is sponsored by my Longaberger home business.  www.longaberger.com/paula

Nature Notes
Goldfinches are in the winter dress.  I saw a Great Blue Heron on our creek.  This was a case of synchronicity since I had been telling our arborist about such a sighting that had happened 3 and a half years ago and not since that time.

Thank you to Meghan of The Stitch It Podcast for talking about my show on her show.

The Blethering Room

We continue our Rip Van Winkle Challenge. (see entries for Oct 1 and Oct 8 2010)  Several Pipeliners have been on the fence about The Clapotis, a pattern by Kate Gilbert that took the knitting world by storm in 2004.   What is it about this pattern that has charmed so many knitters?

Musical Selection

Swedish Folk Musicians Anna Rynefors and Erik Ask Upmark.  Valltrall from album Dram.  Available on Magnatune.

Knitting Tip from Pipeliner Shirley

A music stand comes in handy for skeining recycled yarn.  Loosen the bolt and use it as a swift.

Ravelry Tip
Use Forums to keep track of activity in groups on Ravelry.  You can rearrange you groups in the forum so the most active ones are at the top of the page.

Patterns in the Show
Ms Clarke by Brenda Patipa  I frogged this project because "Silk is a Slippery Slope".  Shifted gear and am using the Lisa Souza 100% Bombay Silk "Sylvie" for a Citron by Hillary Smith Callis.
Meeting Cheryl at Stitches Midwest renewed by interest in Citron.  She added beads to the lower border.

Cabled Raglan Baby Sweater by Rebecca Daniels
Free Pattern.  Notes on my Ravelry page here.  Great pattern and I made a few modifications so the arms and body of the sweater do not flare.

I came up with my own little hat pattern to use up all the yarn.  It looks like a little ski hat. I call it Toe Head.  Pattern on side bar soon.

Do I looks as if I walked out of Cranford?  I forgot my buckets as I came back from the well. Wool is Harmony Fingering Weight in Scottish Heather from The Woolen Rabbit.

Kaellingesjal before I added the top border.

High Notes

Musical Selection
Scotch Tune by Mr. Solomon Eckles (Eccles) performed by Da Camera on their album A Celtic Celebration.  Available from Magnatune.

Episode 15 Rip Van Winkle Challenge

KnitaJourney Interview with Susan
Susan's podcast is fantastic!  Thank you, Susan, for the chat.

Our October Challenge...Rip Van Winkle

American folklore character Rip Van Winkle fell asleep for 20 years before waking up.  Were you "asleep" while others were knitting a project? What projects have been languishing in your pipeline? Leave your Rip Van Winkle projects in the comments section or in the thread on our Knitting Pipeline Podcast Group on Ravelry.  Your name will be entered into a drawing for a Longaberger Bouquet Basket!  This challenge will run through October.  You do not have to finish the project in October, but try to at least start on it.  (not a requirement though...I'm so EASY!)

And Ol' Rip has a connection for us knitters! There is a similar tale from Orkney. Washington Irving's father was from Orkney and probably told the folk tale to his son.  Hence, the rebirth of an old tale, in an Americanized version.  Read more here.

My possible Rip Van Winkle project is Evelyn A. Clark's Swallowtail Shawl which first appeared in the Fall 2006 Interweave Knits.

Needle Notes

  • Janice suggested using craft ribbon (1/16") as stitch holders.  Colorful, cheap, and the flat surface makes it easy to pick up the stitches.
  • Cottontail/Gail takes her soft bound knitting books to an office supply store, such as Staples, to be spiral bound for about $6-$7.  Good idea for those oft-used favorites.

I finished The Cedar Leaf Shawlette by Alana Dakos.  Love this pattern and yarn.  The yarn is Pearl in the color Chimney Sweep by The Woolen Rabbit.

Time out for blocking

Nature Notes

Monarchs are migrating now.  Butterflies are on the wane.  I saw a fox stalk a squirrel this morning.  The squirrel won.

A rare family photo of Franklin (far right), Knit, and Purl.  Knit is in the middle, the larger of the two hens. I had to take the photo through a window so it isn't the best.  The turkeys send their love.
At the end of the podcast there is a piping selection from In Harmony, a CD by The Dutch Pipes and Drums.  Track 3.  Heyken's Serenade.  The CD is available on their web site.

Now don't fall asleep like Rip van Winkle....start knitting!
