Nature Notes

It almost got down to Zero degrees F last night but we only made it to 1 degree.  Winter sunsets are so gorgeous.  Right now I am looking at the sunset through the woods.  We have light snow cover, the bare trees, and reddening sky.

Last night I went to sleep to the sound of the Great Horned Owl.  I was so excited to hear the Great Horned here in the woods because we usually have the Barred Owl also known as 8 Hooters.  Speaking of Owls, Luciaknits linked to an article about the Snowy Owls.  It seems we are having another irruption—remember that word from two years ago?  That’s irruption.  Snowy Owls are often seen during the day and since they are birds of the arctic where there aren’t many trees you are likely to see them lower to the ground, maybe on a fence post or actually on the ground.  Keep your eyes on the fields and open places, airport runways, beaches, and rooftops…you might be one of the lucky ones.  I’m hoping this will be my snowy owl year.

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long, long ago.
