Nature Notes

Even though it isn’t feeling like November, it looks like November outside. November has a beauty of its own. Leaves are stubbornly clinging to a few of the maples and of course, the oaks as well. We’ve experienced a giant moon this past week and it was perfectly enhanced by the bare branches. For those of in the US November is wrapped up in Thanksgiving, a favorite holiday for many.

Bob took down our water feature because if we wait too long then sometimes a pipe is frozen and that gets messy. We speak from experience. We’ve harvested all the green tomatoes and have them ripening on a bench in the garage. This is the latest we have ever had our basil in the garden although it is studded with black spots.

Why does fall/Autumn have two names?

For a long time winter was the only season that had a name. Harvest became the name for what we know call fall/autumn in English.

Nature Notes

It is so gorgeous in the woods now. There is more bright yellow in the leaves that are left on the trees. Maple trees in our neighborhood are vivid red. I just saw a goldfinch…all the males have changed to their winter colors now, drinking from our water feature just outside where I record. Usually they sit on the edge and drink from there but this one perched on a rock and sipped from the fountain. There are a lot of robins in the neighborhood. I saw a flock on my morning walk and there are some foraging outside now. The juncos are back, hopping along on the ground picking up seeds that have fallen from the feeders.l Yesterday on an afternoon walk I saw 2 butterflies! That is on October 31. One was a yellow sulphur and the other was a monarch. Good sightings but I hope that monarch keeps moving south as we could get very cold weather quite soon.

Sometimes people think that woodpeckers must get a headache or concussion when they drum or peck on trees. Fortunately for woodpeckers their skulls are spongy so to absorb pressure.

Why Woodpeckers Don’t Get Concussions by Stephanie Pappos. Live Science.

Bird Brains: Why Woodpeckers Don’t Get Concussions by Nicole Fisher

The force of a woodpecker head-pounding can easily be a force of 1,000 times that of gravity. That would easily kill a human.

Even the woodpecker owes his success to the fact he uses his head and keeps pecking away until he finishes the job he starts. –Coleman Cox

Brioche is like the airlines. Great when things are going well and not so good when they go bad.

I used deep deep stash with the idea that this was a learning piece but it actually turned out ok. Brioche easier to learn with two colors.

Amy gave us tips and when we had problems she was a calm troubleshooter.
