Quince & Co Chickadee colors—there is orange (Poppy)! Ridges of garter stitch add interest. The more colors you use the more you can get away with!

·        Divided box from Harry and David (pears)

·        Smaller size on yoke. Went down a needle size in addition to fewer stitches.

·        Button band and neck band. Steeked the sweater and then knit front bands—was too long. Talked with Angie/Silverbell and decided to go down 3 needle sizes. Love this tighter gauge on the band!

·        Used short rows on neck back so it tapers from front to back.

Added some length to the foot so should fit 6 mo to 1 year. Did not do as much color work because it is less stretchy.

Reading other people's notes it seems these might not be the most practical booties but they sure are quick to knit and the cuteness factor is over the top.

Nature Notes
This morning I happened to see a little white dot traveling up one of the maple trees outside our bedroom window. It was the cute and somewhat elusive Brown Creeper. This little bird is not much bigger than a hummingbird. It has a white breast, which is what I was seeing, and its head, beak, and back are about the color of the trunks of trees. Its beak is long and curved, especially suited to foraging for insects that have taken refuge in the crevices of the tree bark. Another bird that travels along the trunks of trees is the nuthatch, (White-breasted mostly in our area) but the nuthatch travels mostly downward. The Brown Creeper travels upward in a spiral around the tree trunk. I think he or she had a good breakfast. Read more about Brown Creepers here on the Cornell Lab Site.
Last week we had a big event with the birds at the feeder. My husband has been saying for some time that the birds get really close to him when he fills the feeder. He has tried getting them to come to eat out of his hand. He came inside and said that he had 3 “hits”, all Black Capped Chickadees. It was so exciting. It happened again the next day but I’ve not been able to get a photo or video of it yet. The weird thing is that it wasn’t very cold and there was no snow cover so food was not that scarce. I’ll keep you posted on that and we’ll see if they continue to come to him. I’ve said for a long time that I want to try this but he’s always the one filling the feeders so it’s only logical that they should come to him and know him.
Perhaps you have read that we are going to have a full moon on December 25, 2015. It’s the first Christmas full moon since 1977—38 years. The next Christmas Full Moon is in 2034. So it will be an especially bright night especially if we have snow cover. Sounds like a good time for a walk.
The winter solstice is coming up on December 22, next Tuesday.
I know I have read this little poem before but it is sweet and beautiful for this time of the winter solstice.
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.
'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December."

Knitcircus Socks
I would like to be as comfortable with toe up socks as I am cuff down. PrairieGirlSusie from Prairie Girls Knit and Spin podcast said, “I’m a cuff down girl in a toe up world.”
Let’s clear something up here. It’s a sock knitting urban myth: It is NOT easier to try on toe up socks. The needles are in the way! At least with DPN’s.
#2 try Basic Knee High Toe Up Sock.  Gusset and heel. Too short
#3 same thing but started gusset later. On Sock #2 found out that I was 2 or more stitches off from previous sock.
#4 Afterthought heel sock. Success! And it will be easy to replace the heels when they wear out.
Tried picot hem bind off but didn’t really like it so took that out and went with ribbing.
These might be my favorite socks ever, even though they are toe-up!

Balsam Hollow Kit Giveaway from Little Skein in the Big Wool

Christmas at Green Gables features the perfectly Anne-inspired shawl, Balsam Hollow, which Paula Emons-Fuessle of the Knitting Pipeline created for my original Green Gables kit, with a brand new set of colors created by Leading Men Fiber Arts for the holiday version.

With a slight twist to the design, this kit offers a speckled main color (Christmas at Green Gables) and a coordinating edging color in your choice of Winter Shrubbery (a cool green) or Vintage Sleigh Ride (a beautifully vintage oxidized orange). This duo of colors are hand-dyed by Leading Men Fiber Arts on their squishy, warm, sportweight Callback base. The shades perfectly evoke the snowy, vintage landscape of Prince Edward Island.

Vintage Sleigh Ride

If you've knit Balsam Hollow in one of the original Anne colors, you'll want another one in this special, two-color edition. And, if you missed out on the original Green Gables kit, you'll be thrilled by this new interpretation!

Pipeliner Notes

Thank you to everyone who has written to me recently and also to those of you who expressed birthday greetings.

Elizabeth Doherty posted on Episode 229, question on why patterns are not always introduced as individual downloads.

Hi Paula, I’m a bit behind on my podcast listening, so I’m sorry if I’m coming in late on this, but I wanted to reply to your listener’s question about releasing individual patterns from a book or collection—in this case my book, Top Down: Reimagining Set-in Sleeve Design. First though, I should point out that all of the patterns in the book are available individually. They were released in early September, about a month after the book came out.

There are a few reasons why a publisher might wait to release individual patterns, and those that you cited were good ones, but there is another practical one: It takes time to reformat patterns. Not only do they need to be laid out all over again, but extra material such as technique notes and abbreviations that were grouped together in the back of the book need to be added to each pattern on an individual basis. After that, the patterns need to be tech edited, as if for the first time, because once you start moving text around there is a possibility of introducing errors. Hope that helps!

Nature Notes

We have added a suet feeder to the hook system that is mounted to our deck. We thought we could get away with it flying under the radar of the resident raccoons but that didn’t happen. After a few nights we awoke to see that the door of the suet cage was open and the suet was gone. My dear husband now brings the suet feeder in at night and he’ll try to do that all winter, as he does the hummingbird feeder during the spring and summer months. If any of you have a way to keep raccoons out of the suet, please let me know. The nuthatches were the first birds to find the suet followed shortly by downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, Red bellied woodpeckers, and (drumroll), Northern Flicker. I give the Flicker a drumroll because they do not come to the seed feeders at all but they do like the suet. The Northern Flicker is characterized by its large size (bigger than the red-bellied but smaller than a Pileated).  The Flicker has a triangular shaped red patch on the back of its head and a black bib on its mostly brown body.

Northern Flicker on its way to the suet feeder.
How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before its June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?

Needle Notes

Wool Baby by Melissa LaBarre $12 4 Designs- 2 cardigans, a bonnet with lace, and textured blanket all in Quince yarn.

Odessa Shawl by Helen Stewart aka CuriousHandmade

Carodan Farm Chincoteague Tides Gradient (Purchased at NY Sheep and Wool) from Carodan Farm, Chincoteague VA

I added one full repeat of the lace pattern so I could use the most of the gradient. It is a very subtle gradient but there is a lot of light/darker play in the whole thing which adds so much. This was such a pleasure to knit, both yarn and pattern. I also added a bit more garter at the end to use up a little more yarn.

Duergar by Katya Frankel from Head to Toe: Kids’ Knit Accessories.

Ribbing is on the sides and makes the hat swoop slightly to cover the ears better. Cute and different.

Mittens to match with twisted rib on the cuff.

Random.org chose from #2—64 and chose #2

TAnn (Teresa from Emporia KS) wrote Such pretty patterns. I love the blanket but I think I might have to knit Mae first. I like the rounded edges with the geometric/lace pattern. The color I think I would pick is Parsley, it is such a pretty green.

Congratulations, TAnn! Please contact me and I’ll ask the good folks at Quince to gift the book to you.
