Clara (Dress) by Karin Vestergaard Mathiesen Madeline Tosh Pashmina in Blood Runs Cold. Brilliant Red tonal

I had about 4 inches on the dress and decided it was too big. The bottom of the skirt measured 42". Unfortunately there is no schematic for this pattern so you have no easy way to see if you are off. The skirt is supposed to be large but this seems excessive.

Despite gauge swatch, my new gauge seems too big. Closer to 5.5 sts per inch instead of 6.

Tip from JanMarieKnits: Buy t-shirt in the size she is currently wearing and use to size knitted garment.

Nature Notes

It doesn’t feel like winter until we have our first snowfall which is usually within a few days of Dec 1. This year we were awakened on Sunday Dec 4 with a very light snow that lasted throughout the day with large, languid flakes and virtually no wind. It was so beautiful outside. With a wet snow the tree trunks are darker and you have the contrast of the charcoal of the trees with the white snow. The birds were especially busy at the feeders during the snowfall and immediately following. A Flicker has been making regular visits and we have the usual array of downy woodpeckers, nuthatches, cardinals, tufted titmice, and finches coming and going most of the day. We are back into offering a full buffet of black sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, niger thistle seed, and suet. Bon appétit!

The owls are not interested in our seeds but they are interested in the feeders that attract both birds and small mammals that forage in the seed on the ground. In the 9 years we have lived here we have mostly heard and seen the Barred Owl with an occasional Great Horned Owl and Screech Owl (heard but not seen). This year it seems the Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus, which is my favorite owl, has taken over the territory. Their lower, more sonorous and soft, callings punctuate the evenings and early mornings when it is too dark to see them. I’m hoping we have a sighting soon.

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

December 4 snowfall was about 4"
