Nature Notes

August was a gorgeous month here with very mild temperatures and cool nights. This past week has been warm during the day, sometimes hot, but it does cool off at night. Besides the cooler temperatures we note that the hours of daylight are markedly shorter. The red wing blackbirds have migrated and we no longer see them along fence posts. Instead of bird song which we hear in the spring and early summer we hear the rhythmic buzzing of cicadas.
Gorgeous Common Buckeye on zinnia

Our zinnias and butterfly bush in front of the house have been full of nectaring butterflies. One day I saw all these at the same time: Easter Tiger Swallowtail, Common Buck-eye, Silver Spotted Skipper, and Painted Lady.
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

Other visitors to the zinnias have been Giant Swallowtail (actually to the Buddleia), Monarchs, Red Admirals, and various small skippers. On my morning walk I’ve been observing a milkweed plant at the edge of the sidewalk. Holes in the leaves indicated monarch larva activity. I also look for the larvae droppings (also called fracas) which fall on leaves below. Yesterday there was a rather large monarch larva or caterpillar that appeared dead and I confirmed that this morning. I was hoping it had just shed an outer skin but I don’t believe that was the case. The good news was that there was a smaller one already chewing away on one of the leaves. This milkweed is growing alone in a cultivated patch so I’m guessing it is intentional and that makes me happy.

I read a poem “Cicadas” by Helen Lowrie Marshall.

Great butterfly pictures. I must plant zinnias next year. Your shawl is beautiful.

Paula, our bands competed against each other in Waukesha! I'm with Dundee Scottish. Wish I had known there was a knitter in your tent, I would have introduced myself! Your band did well, congrats! I just wrapped up my first solo season in Sr. Novice.

Would love to hear how you like the Ross bag. I play an L & M Scotian grommeted hybrid that is 7 years old. I've loved it, but am beginning to have "wrestling" issues as well. I haven't found a leak, but the area around my bass drone is stretched and "mushy". I'll probably replace it over the winter, but haven't yet decided what I want.

I'm currently working on knit kilt hose. Pictures are up on Ravelry. Do you know Jayne White from Fountain Trust PB, by chance? She is a fellow piper and knitter, and just had the amazing experience of piping at Worlds!
