Nature Notes

As I write today I am looking at our woods of yellow and green hues. Almost half the leaves have fallen, carpeting the woodland floor. We watch squirrels bury acorns from the red oak tree that stands outside the porch. At night we hear the calls of the Barred Owl and occasionally the Great Horned Owl. This morning a Carolina Wren perched on the window ledge as I was eating breakfast. That eye stripe and tail are pretty unmistakeable. We savor these chilly nights and cool, temperate days as winter approaches.

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns. George Eliot
