Nature Notes
It is so gorgeous in the woods
now. There is more bright yellow in the leaves that are left on the trees.
Maple trees in our neighborhood are vivid red. I just saw a goldfinch…all the
males have changed to their winter colors now, drinking from our water feature
just outside where I record. Usually they sit on the edge and drink from there
but this one perched on a rock and sipped from the fountain. There are a lot of
robins in the neighborhood. I saw a flock on my morning walk and there are some
foraging outside now. The juncos are back, hopping along on the ground picking
up seeds that have fallen from the feeders.l Yesterday on an afternoon walk I
saw 2 butterflies! That is on October 31. One was a yellow sulphur and the
other was a monarch. Good sightings but I hope that monarch keeps moving south
as we could get very cold weather quite soon.
Sometimes people think that
woodpeckers must get a headache or concussion when they drum or peck on trees.
Fortunately for woodpeckers their skulls are spongy so to absorb pressure.

Brioche is like the airlines. Great when things are going
well and not so good when they go bad.
I used deep deep stash with the idea that this was a
learning piece but it actually turned out ok. Brioche easier to learn with two
colors.
Amy gave us tips and when we had problems she was a calm
troubleshooter.
