Needle Notes

Alternating skeins in the round. Helix method. Advice from Camanoah who is Judy from Camano Island, Washington.

Your mentioned in the podcast having issues with alternating skeins in the round. My disclaimer about alternating skeins in the round is that I have gone to great lengths to avoid having to do this.
However, I had a thought a while ago when I was contemplating this issue. Why couldn’t you use the helix method (usually used to do single row striping in the round without jogs)? I have only read about this striping method, but it seems like it could solve the alternating issue if you could somehow identify each ball of the same colored yarn (maybe two different colored yarn ball cozies?). Anyway, I haven’t tried it yet, but maybe will try it on something smaller like a Sockhead hat next time I make one. If someone else tries this and it works, let me know!

Socks that Do Not Rock. Abandon ship! Was part of my knitting at Georgia Retreat. Size 0 needle too small. Classic case of needle choice incorrect and making project miserable. I actually broke a needle too!

My gauge has tightened up and the yarn thicker than some fingering. Tight twist.

Simple Skyp Socks by Adrienne Ku.

Socks that Rock Lightweight. Yarn is wonderful but it is quite heavy.

The Secrets of Mary Bowser by Lois Leveen 4 stars. Richmond VA. Young black woman and the role she played in spying during the Civil War and helping slaves and freed slaves escape. Historical fiction.

Jane Two: A Novel by Sean Patrick Flanery. I finished it but it was just ok. 3 stars. Not the greatest writing. A lot of unlikeable characters.

In the Blethering Room

I finished a wool applique wall hanging of cardinals in a tree with snow…gift from friends at the Knitting Pipeline Maine Retreat 2016 and purchased at Camp Wool in Kennebunk. Chattering Cardinals.

Finished piecing a quilt from a kit I bought on Craftsy. Tailor’s Tack Checkerboard. Sent it to Nancy for quilting. (Aizome on Ravelry. GraceandPeaceQuilting on Instagram).
Pieced top of quilt. The quilting will add the magic.

Nature Notes

Here in Central Illinois February begins the slow wake up to Spring. We feel Spring’s heavy-lidded eyes fluttering open and arms beginning to stretch. The hours of daylight are rapidly increasing. One of us will remark “It’s 6 PM and not even dark!” as if this is a miracle, which it is. We notice the birds singing more, especially in the morning. The flocks of cardinals that banded together throughout the winter are breaking up and the individual males are beginning to whistle Chew Chew Chew to establish their territories and find their mates. With its bright colors and beautiful song, perhaps the male cardinal does not have to work that hard to attract a female. Woodpeckers are still one of most common visitors at the feeders. Downy woodpeckers, Red Bellied, Hairy Woodpeckers, and the occasional Flickers are nearly always finding seeds at the feeders or looking for insects in the tree trunks at the edge of the woods.  We enjoy these early signs of Spring; however, we are not yet fooled for we know that Spring will drift back to sleep for a while yet. We still have March for awakening and its been known to snow here in April.

In the garden and woods small flickers of green are beginning to emerge. Our clumps of chives are poking through the remains of last year’s stalks. Soon we will feel confident enough to cut the tender shoots for salads and sandwiches. Bulbs that were hastily planted before the ground froze are poking up through mulch and leaves.

February has shown us quite an array of weather. Snow, ice, fog, rain, thunderstorms, temperatures in the single digits, and now 60 degrees.

I couldn’t think of an appropriate title for this episode. 300 seems to say it all. Thank you to everyone who has listened over the past 7 ½ years. Wisewoman: There’s frogging and there’s hibernating, but there is no cute name for putting a project in the trash when you decide it has thoroughly defeated you. Even threw away the pattern I had paid for on ravelry. Not the first time I have killed off a project and I feel relieved--like you might if you broke your foot or something on the way up Mt. Everest when you really didn’t want to do it, or were doing it for the wrong reasons. I just wish I could come up with a cute name for killing off something. Killing seems too harsh. But then again, I was really mad. Maybe I could call it “too proud to use a lifeline”.

About the shawl design process…

Asymmetrical triangle. Start with just a few stitches and you increase one st per row.

Skagen is a part of Denmark. Skagen is the town. Skagens Odde is the piece of land that points toward Sweden and it divides the two seas that come together there. You can stand with a foot in both seas, Kattegat and Skagerak.

I left off one of the smaller motifs because I could see the cowl would be the right size without it and I didn’t want it to be too deep.

Finished measurements after blocking are 9 1/2” deep and 26” circumference.

This was more than 2 days of knitting.
