Click for Kiley Update

Just wanted to let you know that I finished opening all of the envelopes/packages tonight. We were still receiving mail a few days after the end of the month so we decided to wait until after my graduation to tally all of the numbers. I received 357 hats in total. It was amazing. Thank you so much for helping me with my project and talking about it on your podcast. And just so you know #128 pearlofthepacific won the skein of Wollmeise from my mom. I will be donating the hats to Way to Grow in Minneapolis as my cousin is a social worker there and they work with society’s most isolated children and their families through a home visit model. They are thrilled to be receiving the hats and I will post pictures on the ClickforKiley IG account if anyone wants to follow along. Thanks again, Kiley

Amber Weinberg has left a new comment on your post "Episode 212 Back to Back Beads":

Nature Notes

You might remember that we had stopped filling our platform feeder hoping to distract the bluejays and send them off to our neighbors feeders. Don’t tell our neighbors, but it worked. We have only the occasional blue jay and have more variety with Rosebreasted Grosbeaks, Indigo Bunting and lots of the usual visitors. We did not achieve the goal of nesting house wrens but we knew it was an outside chance. The blue jays are hilarious with some of their calls. One call definitely sounds like someone blowing on a cheap whistle. It’s loud too.

We’ve had more rain and there is more in the forecast. Peoria is situated on the banks of the Illinois River. It is a large river and is expected to crest this weekend. We are already several feet over flood stage and they are sandbagging downtown. We will have flooding but not to the extent of April 2013 which was record flood here and coincided with our Knitting Pipeline Spring retreat. That was interesting for sure although Washington is far enough from the river that we were not affected, at least by the river although a lot of people had water in their homes.

Nature Notes

It is way too quiet around here without the seed in our platform feeder. Oddly enough it seems that the reduction of birds at the platform feeder has affected the birds that generally feed at the other feeders. I believe we are ready to cave in and welcome the Blue jays again even if it means not having House wrens in our bird houses.

Last night we had a series of good ol Midwestern thunderstorms which in addition to lightning included massive rain, hail, and high winds. We have more storms in the forecast and that will probably include more flash flood warnings. Our creek overflowed its banks. I think of all the birds and other animals whose nests were tousled and blown by the wind and soaked by the rain. I’m sure many fledglings perished in these storms and I’m sad for that but I remember that nature’s birth rate is proportional to nature’s mortality rate. A bird only needs to replace itself and possibly its mate to keep the population steady.

Yesterday I was sitting on the love seat in the sunroom when I heard the rustling of leaves in the woods at the edge of the yarn. Usually a rustling of leaves is a squirrel. Squirrels make a lot more noise than seems normal for such a small animal. This time it was not a squirrel but a doe with her young fawn. Then I saw the wee one nuzzle his mother and begin nursing. His or her tail was flicking back at forth. I watched for about 8 minutes at which point the fawn was finished nursing and the two quietly wandered away. I wonder where that fawn and its mother sheltered during the storms. I hope they found a good place.

That beautiful season the Summer!
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light;
and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood."

Pipeliner Notes

Thank you for your responses with regard to Sarah’s Mother Daughter Summer Read Along. My suggestions which came to me after our recording last week were Johnny Tremain, Across Five Aprils, Anne Frank: The Diary of A Young Girl (abridged possibly), The Book Thief, To Kill a Mockingbird, Wonder by RJ Palacio, Anne of Green Gables.

Bronwyn asked for suggestions for a stretchy BO for her toe up socks and several folks mentioned Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy BO. I believe Bronwyn said she had tried that and didn’t like the looks of it. There were some other suggestions so we will see what some others say. Allison, Sticksnspokes said that she likes to increase the number of stitches by 4 or 6 just before and then use a regular bind off.

From Rebekah in Welcome Thread

Hi Paula,

I’ve been working my way though the back episodes and have just caught up and listened to my first up to date episode: 210! Really enjoy the show and appreciate all you put into it.

Thought I’d add the way I store my DPNs as it seems to be an ongoing topic. Keeping in mind I’ve only been knitting for five years and therefore have a reasonable stash of needles, I use a hair elastic as a rubber band around each set of needles which I then store in a pretty mug on my knitting shelf. The elastics come in a multi-sized, multi-colored pack and also make great stitch markers you don’t have to worry about losing.

Thanks again,
Rebekah (from NC)

Thank you for that great tip, Rebekah!

Nature Notes

Summer is in full swing here with warmer temperatures…though not too hot. Our woods is so dense and thick that it sometimes reminds me of a tropical forest…although I have never been to one. Last week I mentioned that we do not have house wrens nesting in our wren houses this year and we sometimes have had 3. I was thinking about what might be different this year from previous years and the one thing that came to my mind is that we have had a lot of blue jays at the platform feeder. I have defended Blue jays and I do believe they get a bad rap. This is the first year we’ve had so many Blue jays here so I started thinking that the wrens might have been put off by that. We decided to stop filling the platform feeder for a while to see what happens. It is empty now and looks a little sad. There are fewer birds, mostly fewer blue jays. We have the safflower tube feeder hanging from the red oak tree, the niger thistle feeder for the goldfinches, and of course the hummingbird feeder.

Our nature quote is from author and blogger Ann Voskamp.

I have lived pain, and my life can tell: I only deepen the wound of the world when I neglect to give thanks the heavy perfume of wild roses in early July and the song of crickets on summer humid nights and the rivers that run and the stars that rise and the rain that falls and all the good things that a good God gives.

Girl’s Best Friend by Bronwyn Hahn

I’ve been a Shawl Slacker.

Last shawl I knit (other than design work) was Susan B Anderson’s Hayward Shawl in February. (Mom’s Lichen is more of a scarf).

Last project with beading was Henslowe by Beth Kling in July 2013!

Fleegle Beader reviewed previously. I don’t use it now. Would not recommend. Shreds yarn.

Stash Dash by TheKnitGirllls

My own stash has been shrinking and it is fun to watch the bin get more empty. Everyone has his or her own idea of stash and I’m not here to judge. I only know when I start feeling uncomfortable then it is time to cut back. I’ve been on stashdown since September 2014 and its been fun. I’ve been intentionally knitting from stash and trying to be creative about it.
