Spring Peepers

Peepers (Pseudacris cruciferi) are as sure a sign of spring as bird song in the morning and the first crocus.  In the spring I like to "go to bed with the frogs and wake up with the birds."

Download Spring Peeper wallpaper and ringtones at National Geographic site.

Hyla Brook

By June our brook's run out of song and speed.
Sought for much after that, it will be found
Either to have gone groping underground
(And taken with it all the Hyla breed
That shouted in the mist a month ago,
Like ghost of sleigh bells in a ghost of snow)—
Or flourished and come up in jewelweed,
Weak foliage that is blown upon and bent,
Even against the way its waters went.
Its bed is left a faded paper sheet
Of dead leaves stuck together by the heat—
A brook to none but who remember long.
This as it will be seen is other far
Than with brooks taken otherwhere in song.
We love the things we love for what they are.

--Robert Frost

Needle Notes

Pieces laid out on the floor to mark the sides for steeking.

Red wool marks the side stitch.  I was preparing to use my sewing machine to stitch on both sides of the line.  Two times for good measure.

I am coming down the home stretch on the Norwegian Sweater.  On Saturday I steeked for the sleeves.  I recorded this technique for you on video.

The next step was joining the shoulders at the top.  I used Meg Swansen's technique, an i-cord Bind Off that is similar to the Three Needle Bind Off except you incorporate i-cord.  It makes a sturdy seam for the drop shoulder and looks nice too.  I left the 3 icord stitches live on each shoulder and will incorporate them into the neck ribbing.  I also sewed the sleeves in the sweater.

The Blethering Room

Thank you for your information and tips about sock heel reinforcement.  Woolly Serger Thread can be found in some fabric stores.  Schoolhouse Press has a heftier version.  It is not wool.  It is actually stretchy nylon with a brushed coating.  Use it to reinforce socks.

My favorite tip is from Anna Lena.  She uses the slip stitch heel technique on the bottoms of her children's socks for reinforcement.  I am going to try this on my next pair of socks.

I darned one more sock using the Swiss Darning Method with my mods.

In the Piping Circle

Thanks to my band mates Karen (Band Manager), Heather, Rob, and Deb who listen to the podcast and encourage me.  Also thanks to Kevin, a great friend and the voice you hear at the beginning of each episode.  The music is Amazing Grace, played at a regular rehearsal in March 2011.  Soloist is Pipe Major Ted Kerrn.

I think I'm excited about the sweater knit along and having just tossed some socks I have vowed to attempt a fix next time. If I had a pod cast I'd surely take it on the road to Alma and Springfield where you need a wooley sweater, you've got a chance to show a pro your Those Mitts, and you begin to see interesting signs to summer just around the corner. I always love listening. Karen

I have a slight obsession with bags so the "froggie" bag got my brain cells firing! How cheerful and cute! I had to take my eyes off of the Three Bags Full etsy site to focus back on work. Oh.... Thanks for spreading the word on this lovely shop!

I'm always in need of a fashionable bag in which to show off my knitting! I never seem to purchase any for myself, however! Would be fabulous to win, but may purchase anyway!

Wow, I missed the frogs on my first glance at the bag photo. The peepers are out here in NW Oregon too. I love the sound. They are soooo tiny for such a relatively big voice.

Barb R. said...

The peepers remind me of the small green frogs in FL. I have forgotten over the years what they are called but they are very tiny but WOW what a big voice. They loved light and stick them selves by succer feet to the bathroom windows and if you leave the lights on, they sing!

Nice project bags are my weakness. Love them you can never have too many. The nature talk and sounds are educational. I've heard those frogs but had never seen one. Thanks for another enjoyable podcast.

Spring peepers have been alive and active on our homestead for a few weeks now and I love their sounds. These bags bring smiles to my face just as the peepers do. I'd love to win them and have them with me as I go places with my knitting.

Your Norweigen sweater is beautiful. I think after knitting one 20 years ago as my first knitting project I'm ready to try again.

I love reading thru your show notes--helps me remember everything I heard on the podcast. All the sock tips have been great. Your sweater is so beautiful. We don't have spring peepers here in this part of MN, so I learned something new. Absolutely loved the piped version of Amazing Grace.

Thanks for a great show! I darned my socks for the first time. Thanks you for inspiring me to do so. Your norwegian sweater looks great. I can't wait to see it finished. I wish my fair-isle would look as neat as yours. I must practice more.

Thanks for the chance to win a knitting bag. I don't think you can ever have enough knitting bags no matter what my family says.

Finally, a wonderful knitting podcast! I wasn't sure if I could find such a thing, as it's an odd concept, really, but I just love your combination nature, knitting, and Celtic music show!

Deb said...

I heard about your podcast from Laura of the Knitgirllls, can't believe I have missed this one! I love your nature segment, I actually found a peeper clinging to the window beside my front door last summer , not quite sure what he was doing there since we're not that close to the woods, maybe the bugs attracted by our lights, but he hung out for a couple of days. Look forward to hearing more, right now I'm off to listen to some old shows!

We are waiting patiently for the peepers here in Maine. We still have feet of snow in a large portion of our yard. The cheery bags from 3 Bags Full look hopeful:-)
Thank you for the tutorial as you assembled your sweater. Kelley (fiberevincer on Ravelry)

In Puerto Rico we have the "coqui", very similar to the spring peepers. Their night music lulled me to sleep as a kid. I happened to be listening to the podcast while out at breakfast and I heard the clip and it took every thing I had to keep my head from falling into my tray. Thanks & stay well.

Thank you for bringing the Quince & Co. yarn and Estelle pattern to Camp KIP. I will be purchasing the pattern, joining the KAL and trying to complete a sweater for myself that fits. You are a dear, Paula.

The peepers remind me of the croakie frogs where my daughter lives in Hilo, Hawaii. When we talk on the phone, I can hear them in the background - and they are such tiny things. I always enjoy your podcast.

Loved the episode, your peepers remind me of the tree frogs we had on St.John, USVI. They were slightly larger than our thumb nail and filled the night with their song. The bags are great and I'd love to be entered into the drawing.

I love the peepers! Spring is such a wonderful time. I ride my bike to work several times per week and I always enjoy riding through a low-lying marshy area because it's so alive with the song of the peepers!

I thought the sound outside was crickets, and now I have a nice clear vision of the Tree Frogs! They do sound like jingle bells. This afternoon I was sitting on the steps, knitting and heard them and it was 3:30pm
2 years ago I had a family of tree frogs in my planter (3rd floor) and took it in my apt. to take outside, and I dropped it! I was terrified, picking them up, hopping everywhere with my big Coon cat looking on! Got 'em all and put back outside on the balcony!!

Lisa said...

Your Norwegian is gorgeous! You make it sound ho hum on the podcast but it's stunning! I loved the video and audio of the peeper. I remember hearing tree frogs in Puerto Rico. They are so soothing.

Loved the podcast! The peeper sound recording was awesome. Growing up in India the harsh cricket sounds would be very disturbing for my dad and I so we used to be on mission to swat them dead!!

Loved the Amazing Grace tune - it's my all time favorite hymn!

The bags from 3 bags full are so cute!
Thanks Paula.
