Nature Notes
Last Friday we awoke to dense fog which was not an auspicious beginning to our Snowy Owl Expedition.  Well, maybe it was.  We made it to the Emiquon Wetland Preserve and saw quite a few American Bald Eagles.  We also saw Snow Geese!  There were thousands of them flying in ribbons as far as we could see down the waterway.
Funky and Aizome did see Snowy Owls in Minnesota!  I have not given up yet and there is always next year.

For the record, I have tried duplicate stitch (Swiss Darning) and do not like it for the tight gauge of socks.
I read a letter from JudyBee who is knitting Kevlar into her bullet proof socks!  Even Charlene Schurch was impressed!
Ten Stitch Twist by Frankie Brown took a little over a month to knit using stash yarn.

May I say how much I love my joins?

My nephew produced a clever video featuring the bed he made and Woodturner Pully.  The house where this film was made was built by my dad in the 1960’s.  The watercolor paintings on the walls are by my dad.  Dad made the lamp and the small table.  And yes, that’s my little mom with my nephew!

 I wore my Radiance Shawl to my nephew's wedding.  Someone cleaned her glasses with it.  But it wasn't any of the lovely people in this photo.  This is our immediate family: 3 sons, 1 DIL and future DIL, husband, and me.




These are our three sons who were ushers for the wedding.  I'm so proud of them.

Whole Wheat Bread Baking for Zabelle in Montreal.  The tutorial and recipe is on the side bar. The original recipe came from The Vegetarian Epicure by Anna Thomas c. 1972.  (yikes!)  Now out of print but it seems there are lots of used copies out there.  But none of them probably have as many food stains as mine does.  My favorite yeast is SAF available from King Arthur Flour.  I also like the recipes on the King Arthur Flour site.  This is what the SAF Yeast looks like.  I buy the red not the gold.  A whole pound for just $5.95!

If you have never made bread before start with white bread.  You can also gradually work your way from white bread to whole wheat by slowly changing the ratio.

Don't worry, this is not turning into a food podcast.  This was just a diversion.

Our Fawl Shawl KAWL for Awl continues!  Wave 2 starts on or around October 15th.  Bronwyn and Charr are still knitting Shaelyn and others are just beginning so feel free to join the fun!

I finished my Shaelyn by Leila Raabe.  I used 2 skeins of  Quince &  Co Chickadee in the colorway Carrie's Yellow.  Main Modification was that I doubled the length of the bottom lace border and added one garter ridge at the bottom of the lace.  I also used a simple backward loop instead of M1's.





Correction on TwinsetJan's tip for lifelines from last podcast.  Use a circular needle size 0000 or thereabouts.  Also, Jan says she threads the needle through the row below after knitting back.  Thanks, Jan.  I may try it again after I find a needle in this teeny tiny size!

  • My Kollage Circular Needle broke at the cable join.  There is a one year warranty and I just bought it at Sock Summit.  I just wanted to let you know because I still do prefer Kollage double points over most other brands but I am now cautious about the circulars.  I am going to contact Kollage so stay tuned.  Also, there will be wooden needles reviewed soon.

Twist, Steek, and Shout

Before steeking The Classic Lines Cardigan...It is a like a Straight Jacket.  Bronwyn does not look happy, does she?  (This was not staged.)


It worked!  Bronwyn is a Happy Steeker!  And the sweater fits!
(We had to reduce the file to upload to You Tube and it is not very good quality.)


Disclaimer:  We do not recommend twisting your sweater but if it happens and you are 9 inches into the sweater before figuring that out (Go, Bronwyn!) then know that IT CAN BE DONE!

Fall Shawl KAL

Shaelyn by Leila Raabe is the #1 pick for the KAL.  If you would rather do Simply Pretty, then go right ahead.  It is not that different.

Stitches Midwest is August 25-28.  I will be there on the 25th and 26th.  There will be a Pipeliner Meet and Greet on Friday August 26 starting at 11 AM in the Concession area of the Market.  I will be sitting there with my knitting and I hope you can join me. 

Betty Hay asked questions about attending big knitting events such as Sock Summit and Stitches.  Betty, I apologize for not answering sooner.

  • Set a budget and perhaps some goals.  I try to think ahead of time what I am looking for.
  • Take cash for the Market.
  • If you are wavering on a purchase then think about it for a while.  Come back later.  Sometimes you have more perspective.  

I take easy project to work on so I can chat with people easily.

Take some business cards with your Ravelry information, your blog if you have one, to exchange with people you meet.

Keeping up energy among a lot of people:  Are you and introvert or an extrovert?  A definition is that an introvert gathers energy from being along and an extrovert gathers energy from being with others.

Bronwyn needs help with her Classic Lines Cardigan.by Alison Backus.  She has 9" of the body finished (bottom up) and found that she twisted the join.  It is a full twist, not a moebius (half).  The cardigan will be steeked.  Bronwyn wants to finish the sweater as is and then steek.  I am skeptical that this will work.  The sweater is also too big for her so I was going to tell her to be safe and frog it.  She did a paper mock-up and steeked the sample.  It worked.  Has anyone tried this?  Opinions?

Random Friend Deletions on Ravelry

Over the past few months I have been friended by people who I was sure were already in my friends.  Recently a person called this to my attention because she felt she had been deleted intentionally.  I have never deleted anyone from my friends list and do not intend to do so.  I have reported the bug to Casey on Ravelry.  If you have had similar experiences please let Casey know on the For The Love of Ravelry Board in the thread I started.  The challenge of fixing this is that it is random and people don't usually notice exactly when it happens.  Just know I have not unfriended anyone and if you have dropped off my list, please friend me again.  Thanks!

Sock Summit

Turkish Bed Socks by Churchmouse Yarn and Teas.  Charr and I started these as our Sock Summitt KAL  (just the two of us).  I like the end result that I have seen on various project pages but was not keen on the one I finished.  The construction method seems fiddly to me.  I would rather knit a short sock.  These do look very cute with clogs! 



Charr and I visited Twisted in Portland.  It is a lovely yarn shop and we were impressed by the friendly staff.  They feature many of the local independent dyers.

Charr and I met Ms. Gusset and volunteered to help in her booth at The Marketplace.  We had fun!  Charr's And So Are You Shawl was a big hit with people passing by the booth.
