Episode 26 Winter Solstice

Listen here or use the Flash Player on this page.
I became very excited when I saw the Danish greeting!  Be sure to enlarge this on your screen to enjoy the full effect of the band and dancers.  From The Dutch Pipes and Drums.
Cardinalis cardinalis
The Northern Cardinal is a brilliant bird in our winter landscape.

Are ponchos in or out?  Probably out but ask me next week.  The fashion tends to come and go.

A new podcast that I've listened to:  Clothed in the Lamb by Janeen.

"Those Mitts" by Leslie Friend.  A total of 5 pair.  The gold ones are "Carrie's Yellow" in the Chickadee (sport weight) by Quince & Co.

Aren't they pretty?
Shizuku by Angela Tong.  Yarn requirements: 2 skeins of Noro.  I used Farmhouse Chunky.

  • Tang by Wendy Bernard and others in Custom Knits
  • Cadence Pullover by Jordana Page
  • Wonderful Wallaby by Carol Anderson/Cottage Creations
  • Oh Baby! Baby Bootie
  • Ribwarmer by Elizabeth Zimmermann
  • Baby Surprise Jacket by Elizabeth Zimmermann
  • Retro Baby Smock
  • Woodsmoke by Jared Flood in Brave New Knits
  • Elektra by Rosemary Hill
  • Schieffelin Point Shawl
  • Catenary by Kiersten Brandt
  • Martha Stewart's Knitted Neck Scarf
I enjoyed the article by Carol Sulcoski.   This gave me a new perspective on choosing yarns for a project.

High Note

Baked Sweet Potato
Cover a baking sheet with non-stick aluminum foil (I use Reynold's Brand).  Otherwise you will have a lot of sticky goo to clean off your pan.  If you don't mind that, just oil the pan a little.  Wash whole potatoes and brush with olive oil.  Bake in 350 to 375 degree oven until potatoes start to ooze (about 1.5 hours).  Then they are done.  Even the skins taste good!  And they are good for you, too!  Serve with a big lettuce salad for a great, healthful meal.

Star of Bethlehem

I tell a story about my war on the Star of Bethlehem in the garden at our old house.  Do not plant this bulb.  It is so invasive!  My friend Joan played a little joke on me.

Westknits Giveaway!
Everyone who leaves a comment here will be in a drawing for 3 patterns, compliments of Stephen West!

Thanks to everyone for your support in the first 6 months of the podcast!  If you are able to leave a positive 5 star review on iTunes, please know that will help others find the podcast.  Have a wonderful holiday!

Love the fingerless mittens, very stylish! Thanks for your podcast and Merry Christmas.

I am one of those people who think ponchos are always "in", but it probably depends on the style. The owners of our LYS believe firmly that ponchos shouldn't be worn by anyone over the age of 10, but I disagree. :)

That's one of the most delightful photo arrangements of knitting I've seen...the blues especially, but the butter shades set those off! So glad I discovered you!

Your photos are beautiful! Love the knits and the blend of colors - blues and yellows together just say warmth to me! Keep the great stuff coming! Have a very Merry Christmas :)

I found your podcast thanks to Vogue Knitting posting a link to it on facebook. What an enjoyable time I spent listening to you while I was cooking.

That Star Of Bethlehem story made me absolutely laugh out loud! And thanks for the great info on choosing yarn.

Can ponchos be "out" when wraps and shawls are "in?" I've had a boneyard shawl in my queue for a year. Now might be the time to win!

My mother was, among other things, a flower arranger. She used a lot of Star of Bethlehem for bride's bouquets. It was beautiful. But she always referred to it as "S.O.B." which sounds like an appropriate name. hutchart (ravelry)

I'm almost done with a pair of 'those mitts'. Great idea. Re: Stephen West's patterns, I'd be happy for me or anyone else who wins those patterns!

Another great podcast Paula! We have alot of beautiful red Cardinals around here. BlueJays too. Stunning to watch against the beautiful white snow. Happy holidays! :)

Thanks for the podcast Paula. This may have already been mentioned...but Stephen West has several patterns that could fit into your "garter st. anyone?" thread. His designs are innovative and unique. I'm sure they are interesting and fun to knit.

I'm with Chris on the subject of ponchos, they are always in. That said, it might be wise not to make them "loud and garish" but rather "colorful and stylish". I have a nice warm burgundy one that I made for myself by holding a strand of worsted merino with a strand of a worsted alpac/silk blend. It is my "air-travel" poncho and goes on every trip I take from or to a cool clime. I find that the poncho is easy to use with shoulder bags and stays on as I rush from gate to gate. Further, it is a great blanket, now that airlines don't always supply them. Check mine out on Ravelry -http://www.ravelry.com/projects/redsknits/stockinette-and-seed-stitch-poncho.

Oh, I just love Westknits designs! I knit both Daybreak and Boneyard this summer, and I've got Clockwork in my mental queue. In fact, some yarn that will make a gorgeous Clockwork arrived under my Christmas tree this afternoon!

Thank you and thanks to Westknits for this awesome giveaway!

I love your comments about shawls and other knits. Ponchos are something I will never wear. I grew up in the 60's and I had to wear the ponchos that my grandmothers made. They were knitted well, but-well, you know-I was MADE to wear them.

I'm not sure about a poncho. I have flashbacks to a harvest gold/avocado green crochet poncho an Aunt made for me in the early 70's. On the other hand, the WestKnits giveaway would be a great way to start the new year.

Listening for the first time. One of my favorite finished projects is a Daybreak by S. West. You can see it here: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/BlueMoonArtistry/daybreak I was thrilled when my son, who I originally knit it for confessed that he would prefer a more earth-toned scarf...so I got to keep it for myself! I wear it all the time. I'd love the opportunity for more Westknits patterns.

Hi, Paula. I have so loved listening to your podcast. Your thoughtful comments have provided a lovely addition to the growing world of online knitting communication. Thanks so much!

I've read a few knitwear designers say when they knit for pleasure they choose simple designs...like Stephen West's designs, I imagine. Just lovely piles of stitch after stitch!

Paula, you know I run behind and I didn't listen to this (great!) podcast until this past Monday, first day back at work and faced a mountain of year-end work and many deadlines. Was tired and downcast as I began my walk. Between the Star of Bethlehem story and the Vogue photo styling descriptions, I was laughing aloud as I walked. Thank you for yet another fabulous podcast. A joy. Haven't listened to Passion episode yet, but your Citron looks fabulous.
